One Year Ends …
Well, here it is, New Year’s Eve. I often say that for all of the “holiday season” the New Year is the holiday that suits me best (this year’s Boxing Day Miracle not withstanding). I learned to really LOVE New Year’s celebrations while I was in Japan. They don’t have big gala parties like we do, they celebrate by going with the family to a local shrine (or traveling to a larger regional one), tossing coins into a collection box, clapping their hands twice, and saying a simple prayer. Then they go have something to eat. It’s a simple acknowledgment that time has passed and there is much live yet to be lived … somewhat akin to typical celebrations of Rosh Hashana (the Jewish New Year).
Anyway, I DO love the New Year. I’m spending a pretty quiet one here at Chez Stan! I’ve been doing some reading (catching up on comics that I’ve purchased but not read), listening to music (a large chunk of Sting’s discography), and when I finish this entry I’m going to go out to eat a late dinner. Since I don’t know of any Shinto shrines around here, I may head down to the beach after that, throw a stone into the Pacific Ocean (a symbolic coin that can’t be considered littering), clap my hands twice, and say a quick little prayer.
2007 is only a few hours away … and I’m looking forward to that.
I’m going to try to get into the habit of posting here more regularly … hopefully beginning tomorrow. But whether I do or not, I want all of you reading to know that I appreciate that you take the time and spend the small emotional investment to care what I have to blather about.
Happy New Year to you all. May it bring you happiness … that’s really the BEST thing any of us can hope for. Now get out of here … there’s a lot of live yet to be lived.
