… And Another Begins!
Welcome to 2007, my friends! January 1st is really just another day, but symbolically it is a time to start fresh, to focus on the future, to start new projects, and to kick old habits.
Of course, if you’re like me, you rail against such an arbitrary starting point. Why SHOULD the first day of the year be any BETTER than any OTHER day on the calendar for making positive changes in your life? I deeply dislike the idea of waiting for specific societal markers to begin self-improvement … once you KNOW there’s something to do, then you should just DO it no matter WHAT the date is.
Having said that, though, this year there are definitely some self-improvements I’ve been procrastinating … not because I was waiting to start them on January 1st, but because at heart I AM a procrastinator. And I’m not going to let my personal disdain for “New Year’s resolutions” get in the way of actually making positive changes for myself.
What ARE my resolutions? Sorry, but I function better when I don’t TALK about them … that’s another one of the perverse sides of my nature. I’m better at silently DOING things for my OWN motivation than announcing my targets and then doing them because I’ve got added pressure from people ASKING about my progress. As I get closer to accomplishing a goal, I’m more willing to talk about the whole process and THEN use external support to motivate me across the proverbial finish line.
Suffice it to say, I have three or four VERY measurable goals I’d like reach during 2007. I hope I’ll be able to share my progress with you on some of them before too many weeks have passed.
In the meanwhile, good luck to you on whatever resolutions, projects, or personal goals you’ve set for yourself!
Oh, and Happy New Year!
