Live-Sketching the State of the Union

I’ve been trying to strengthen my caricature skills a little recently—practicing more, participating in some free public events, and such—so while I decided to try something new while watching President Obama’s State of the Union address last Tuesday.

Last year I did some sketching in my notebook of the different faces that were popping up on my screen, but this year I decided to combine quick sketches of the president with quotes taken from the speech he was giving . . . and to post them to my Twitter and Facebook pages as soon as they were complete. I’m moderately happy with the results (I STILL don’t feel that I capture Obama’s likeness as well as I’d like . . . but then, I’m no Ann Telnaes).

  1. I think you captured the president pretty well. I’ve always been fond of caricature, has a bit of a magic quality about it.

    Thanks, Sig. :^)

One of the things I hope to do in 2016 is hone my skill with that particular brand of magic just a little sharper.
