Happy Poe Day

As I said a couple of weeks ago, my list of Artist Holidays is pretty strongly front-loaded on the calendar. We’re only in the third week of the year, and this is the third auspicious day of inspiration … the anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe’s birth!

I haven’t always had an easy relationship with old E.A. … an professor who refused to let beginning level students react to Poe in an honest, emotional way put very bad associations in my head. But in recent years I find I’ve finally cleansed that from my system and I can get back to just flat out enjoying the macabre masterpieces he penned. Though, honestly, I most often go back to his three stories of the consulting detective C. Auguste Dupin (arguably the first detective stories ever written). It’s amazing how much impact Poe had on American literature given his relatively short career and life.

So let us raise a glass of Amontillado as we sit beside our chamber doors, and think thoughts of mystery and imagination … evermore.
